Lore & Background

Divinity: Original Sin II is set in the medieval fantasy world of Rivellon, centuries after the events of Divinity: Original Sin. The story begins after the passing of Lucian, a Human revered as the Divine, and follows a Sourcerer—a user of a powerful magic called Source—who is persecuted by the Divine Order. The player character, known as a Godwoken, becomes a pivotal figure in the fight against the Voidwoken, monstrous creatures that wreak havoc on Rivellon. The game begins with the player character imprisoned on the island of Fort Joy, where they witness the brutal regime of the Magisters led by Bishop Alexandar and his advisor Dallis. After escaping, the Godwoken meets the Seekers and visits the Hall of Echoes, encountering one of the Seven deities, who explains that the Veil separating Rivellon from the Void is weakening.

Reader's Guide

Divinity: Original Sin II is significant for its flexible quest system, deep character development, and cooperative multiplayer that allows up to four players. The game was financed via a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $2 million and sold over a million copies in two months. It received significant praise for its writing, story interactivity, combat system, cooperative multiplayer, and music. The Definitive Edition, released in 2018 on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and later on other platforms, expanded the storyline and improved gameplay. A sequel titled Divinity was announced in December 2025. The game's open-ended class system, environmental interactions, and dialogue trees that allow multiple solutions to quests have made it a benchmark in the role-playing genre.
