Deep Down (video game)

Unreleased Capcom action RPG announced for PlayStation 4 in 2013.

Deep Down (working title) is an unreleased action role-playing game from Capcom, which both developed and planned to publish it. First announced for the PlayStation 4 in 2013, the project stalled in development hell and, though reportedly near completion, never saw a release. It is often called vaporware, but Capcom has never officially canceled it. The game blends science fiction and fantasy, featuring cooperative multiplayer for up to four players. Its story begins in a far-future New York City, where characters are sent back in time after touching magical artifacts.

In terms of gameplay, Deep Down supports single-player or co-op sessions with up to three others, focusing on dungeon crawling. Critics compared its style to Capcom’s own Dragon’s Dogma. Players explore procedurally generated dungeons set in a medieval fantasy world, wielding armor, swords, pikes, and shields. Enemies draw from classic fantasy tropes, including ogres, mimics (shape-shifting creatures similar to those in Dungeons & Dragons), and dragons.

The plot places the player in New York City in the year 2094, as a member of a group called the “Ravens.” These individuals can recover historical memories by touching ancient objects. The protagonist is brought to examine excavated artifacts from a mysterious 15th-century civilization in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic) and is tasked with using this ability to explore the city and uncover its secrets.

Development began with the PlayStation 4’s reveal at a Sony event on February 20, 2013. Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono, known for the Street Fighter series, introduced Deep Down alongside the company’s new “Panta Rhei” engine, built specifically for the PS4. This engine was meant to replace Capcom’s MT Framework. The reveal trailer showed an armored warrior fighting a fire-breathing dragon in a medieval setting. Capcom chose to create a new brand to freely explore the next-gen console’s architecture, avoiding constraints from player expectations. The game was absent from E3 2013.

At Tokyo Game Show 2013, Ono announced Deep Down would be free-to-play, with a planned 2014 release following a public beta timed to the PS4’s Japanese launch. In early 2015, producer Kazunori Sugiura told 4gamer that the game’s vision had grown since its 2013 reveal, aiming for long-term player appeal, which extended the development timeline. Capcom renewed the trademark

Lore & Background

Deep Down was revealed at the PlayStation Meeting on February 20, 2013, where Sony debuted the PlayStation 4. Capcom's Yoshinori Ono, best known for his work on the Street Fighter series, unveiled the game alongside the new 'Panta Rhei' game engine, designed specifically for the PlayStation 4. The reveal trailer showed an armored warrior battling a medieval fire-breathing dragon. Capcom chose to make a new brand for freedom to explore next-gen video game console architecture, avoiding limitations from consumer expectations. The game did not have a presence at E3 2013.

During Tokyo Game Show 2013, Ono announced that Deep Down was to be a free-to-play title, with an initial expected release date in 2014 after a public beta coincided with the Japanese release of the PS4. In early 2015, Kazunori Sugiura stated in an interview with 4gamer that the vision for the game had expanded since its initial 2013 reveal, to better appeal in the long term to players, and so the development timescale had been extended. Capcom extended the trademark for the game in June 2018 but let it lapse in 2020.

During an interview with Eurogamer in November 2019, Ono responded to a mention of Deep Down, saying that despite its long absence, the game '[has] not been completely given up on'. With Ono's departure from Capcom in 2020, the release status of Deep Down is publicly unknown. In September 2021, former chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden stated that he had 'no idea' what happened to Deep Down but says that other team members of Yoshinori Ono might pick up the game further to develop.

Reader's Guide

Deep Down remains a notable example of vaporware in the video game industry, representing a high-profile project that was near completion but never released. Its significance lies in its ambitious blend of science fantasy and cooperative dungeon crawling, with gameplay described as similar to Capcom's own Dragon's Dogma. The game's procedural generation of medieval/fantasy dungeons and its time-travel premise—set in far-future New York City with players teleported back by touching magical artifacts—showed Capcom's intent to innovate. The use of the Panta Rhei engine, designed specifically for the PlayStation 4, marked a technological shift for the company, though the engine's adoption was limited. The game's long development hell, free-to-play model announcement, and eventual silence despite being near completion have made it a subject of curiosity and speculation among gamers. Its legacy is tied to the broader phenomenon of unreleased games that generate lasting interest, and its status as not officially cancelled leaves a faint possibility of eventual release, though Ono's departure from Capcom in 2020 has cast further uncertainty.
